Canyon Passage (The Saturday Evening Post, 1945)

In 1945, Teague and Ernest Haycox were paired yet again in the Haycox serial Canyon Passage.  In Canyon Passage, protagonist Logan Stuart is determined to make his freight line a success in 1850’s frontier Oregon.  Between him and his fortune stand his friend, the troubled gambler George Camrose, and Honey Bragg, an enemy and a thug.  Love interests complicate matters even further.  In 1946, Canyon Passage was made into a movie starring Dana Andrews, Brian Donlevy and Susan Hayward.  Lloyd Bridges also appears in the movie, which was directed by Jacques Tourneur.

Teague’s illustrations for Canyon Passage at times push the boundary between illustration and fine art.  The illustrations are presented below in their entirety.  A few still photos of actors taken by Teague and used to help create these illustrations are presented as well.  Story text has been omitted for a cleaner presentation.
