In 1952, Collier’s paired Teague with Luke Short for his serial Saddle By Starlight. In Saddle, rancher Sam Holley of the Six-Up spread works to unite neighboring ranchers in the North Basin against a group of homesteaders and Hugh Ganley, a surveyor who stands to profit if the region is settled by the homesteaders. Ganley brings in two gunslingers from Texas to help his effort along. A neighboring foreman dies, and Holley is falsely blamed for the death. Tension rises to the deadly climax.
Saddle contains Teague’s best bar fight scene, which certainly ranks among the greatest bar fight scenes in the history of western illustration. In Saddle, Teague created a world full of resolute western characters and gorgeous horses. Saddle By Starlight is presented in its entirety below, along with some materials from the Teague archive. Story text is omitted for a cleaner presentation.
